Notes+ Scrappy was found as a stray, skinny, limping severely and, at times, dragging his hind end. He has suffered a pelvic bone injury, too long ago to repair now, and tested positive for FIV (feline immunodeficiency virus). After weeks in his foster home, he has shown great improvement in his ability to walk and has overall is much healthier.

Being FIV+ may mean Scrappy needs a little extra attention to his health: Regular veterinary checkups and safe, low-stress indoor lifestyle to help keep his immune system strong. An FIV+ cat can live a long, happy and loving life. FIV is not spread to people or other species. With proper care, an FIV-positive cat can be an affectionate, playful, and wonderful companion. Adopting him means looking beyond a diagnosis and giving him the opportunity to show you just how much love he has to give. The greatest reward is giving a deserving cat the chance to experience a loving home instead of being overlooked because of his diagnosis.

If you already have cats at home, adopting an FIV-positive cat is still a possibility, but there are a few important things to consider. FIV is primarily transmitted through deep bite wounds, so casual contact such as sharing food and water bowls, grooming, sleeping together, or from living in the same home is not considered a way for FIV to be contracted. If your current cats are aggressive, territorial, or prone to fighting, scrappy may not be a good fit.
